My OMG moment started when I read the words, “I’m a producer at ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer.” OMG Diane Sawyer and Mommy Mafia? Whatttttttt?
The email went on:
“We’re working on a Real Money series for this week about mom bloggers and ways to save money. I liked a lot of the guides on your site. The piece I’m working on is about fast food and on-the-go families. Our segment will be about faster and cheaper ways to make dinner? Our Real Money team wants to come to the rescue. We think your family sounds like a good fit for this.”
I’m still in shock. I mean OMG! Diane Sawyer and Mommy Mafia? That’s crazy! The ABC production team flew down yesterday to Miami and filmed the family. A full recap once it airs (Wednesday, January 22nd. 6:30pm Eastern Standard Time). OMG OMG OMG #MommyMafia

We’re having our “date” tonight @ 630 pm in front of our tv. Just in case, I’m recording it AND saving it so that I can brag about my little sis to everyone who comes to visit.
Since this is a special night, I wanted to contribute our dinner menu:
Nice and Easy Dinner:
Small salad topped with warm baked goat cheese
Grilled steaks
Brown rice pilaf
Baked apple topped with honey roasted almonds
It’s quick and easy to prepare but the best thing is that you can use it for a special meal by adding your own special touches. For example, we’re going to eat in front of the tv, and yes, on TV tray tables? Since it’s also date night, I’ m going to serve it up beautifully by simply using a nice placemat, linen napkins, candles and fresh flowers.
Money Saving Tips for the Fun Stuff
~ Grab some scissors and go outside to snip pretty live branches or interesting dried ones and a few flowers. You can create a simple floral display in a vase or jars, mugs, glasses, bottles, etc.
~ Always check the clearance section, usually found at the end of the aisles or back of stores. If something looks interesting and it’s inexpensive, think outside the box for ways to use it.
~ Support your local thrift stores and just go in for a treasure hunt. You will be surprised at what you discover if you take time to slowly walk around and really look at all their is. I’ve found truly unique and special items where most people don’t look; glance at the items UNDER display table, on high shelves, or in closed boxes that look unattractive, in baskets
Examples of some of my personal finds and creations:
~A soap dish or plate to use under a simple clay pot with any plant, place pretty stones, and add live or dried moss, candy dish, or as a base to display something you already own that you want to make “pop”
~ For linens, you can be creative and use outdated bandanas, scarves, even fabric remnants. I found a narrow curtain panel which is now a table runner.
~ Large wood and metal trays that easily became table tops by just placing on a plant stand or adding legs ( find those at Lowe’s, Home Depot)
~ Driftwood and shells can become just about anything. I have shells with air plants glued to them, driftwood with candles on them, crystal vases with shells and crystal balls/pebbles and wireless mini lights that make them glow, or simply glue some on a frame or mirror.
Next time you take the kids to the beach, turn walking with you in to a game. Bring along some of those weightless recycle shopping bags we all have and simply look at what has washed up. Now, just like in a thrift store, special pieces don’t simply appear. Bring along a stick to use for poking and moving things around. Make it fun! My grand sons love to use what they find to make all sorts of things.

How awesome for you! Congratulations. And what a neat concept for a segment. Those are really great tips. My 5 year old can tell you that we don’t buy oranges in the summer because they’re not in season. It just doesn’t make sense from a financial or nutritional stand point. Found you via SITS!!
