WHY is it so hard for Mommies to get together? There’s the old “We don’t take time for ourselves” thing I suppose. Yet, we can make to preschool every day, playdates, parties. But a Mommy Night out? Ha. Those are about as rare as Gucci having a buy one get one free sale. We can plan months in advance, absolutely, positively, pinkie-swear that “Yes! I’ll be there FOR SURE!” and then an hour before we are supposed to leave, the sitter cancels. Or the baby gets a hacking cough. Or our husband finally landed a dinner with that client he’s been calling for a month…
But when the stars align, and it actually happens, there really is power in Mommies taking the time to put on some lipgloss, drink a glass of wine and listen to another woman talk about how she found her baby covered in a full tub of Desitin diaper cream this morning.
So as Mafia Mommies, we try. We REALLY try to make it happen. Our latest Mommy Mafia MIAMI meetup was this past Thursday at the Miami New Times’ Iron Fork event held at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Downtown Miami. The Iron Fork event is the kick-off party for the two-month long Greater Miami and the Beaches Miami Spice restaurant promotion that comes to Miami every August and September. Iron Fork sounded like it would be fun. Mafia Mommies talked about a Mommy Night out on our Facebook page for months. We bought tickets. We booked sitters. We were going to do this.
Mafia Mommy M and I took a cab. Our VIP tickets gave us early access, and we were there, ready for action. At 5:57pm, I get a phone call from Mafia Mommy C who was coming down from North Miami with Mafia Mommy S & M (hahaha- S&M).
“You aren’t going to believe what’s happening.”
“Does it involve midgets?”
“Ha, ha. No. But it does involve firefighters.”
“Okaaaay?”
“Well MM C’s husband asked her to wear her wedding ring tonight, to the party….”
“Uh huh….”
“…and she hasn’t really worn it since she had the baby….”
“…and it was too tight and now they can’t get it off her finger and she’s kinda freaking out and saying that her finger is turning blue and she’s on her way to the fire station to have them cut it off….”
“omg.”
“I KNOW!”
Five minutes later, I get THIS picture:
So what do you say after getting a picture like that? I show MM M and by that time, two other Mafia Mommies had shown up, so of course I show them my phone. After a fair amount of “OMG!’s” We pretty much assume they’re not going to make it. We toast to ourselves for not having to get our wedding rings cut off to make it here and we start our night. It was fun. There was food, drinks, funny people dressed up in costumes from Slava’s Snowshow. Good Stuff. About twenty minutes later, the North Miami crew showed up, THEY MADE IT! After a nice big hug, MM S pulls this ziplock bag out of her purse:
Yes, That is her engagement ring AND her wedding band in that bag. Some of the diamonds had popped out of their settings from being stretched out. The firemen told her that if she had waited ten minutes more, she would have had permanent nerve damage. I’ll wait for you to take a closer look at the screen and do your own “omg.” Go ahead, I’ll wait.
So that was the real excitement for the night. The rest of the night was fantastic and we all had a fabulous time, like we always do, when we actually pull these things off.
“Sometimes Mommy Needs a Time Out Too” has always been the theme for our Mafia Meetups. Take time for yourself sometimes, Mommy. It IS important. It will give you that time to connect with women who GET IT. I mean, it’s not like we’re asking you to cut off your wedding ring or anything.
