There are plenty of reasons why you may come to a point where you need to switch your dog’s food. For example, maybe your young dog isn’t a puppy anymore and is ready to transition to an adult formula food. Or maybe like we saw in our own little Disco, one day her food started causing irritation and rashes. Once we switched her food to Beneful, those rashes went away. But dog owners know that you can’t just feed your dogs one type of food and then give them another brand, because doing that will most likely bother their little tummies. So it’s important to gradually transition to a new dog food.
My dogs, Vegas, Shorty and Disco have been Beneful dog food eaters for a while now. As Beneful ambassadors, they were the first to get a taste of Beneful’s new and improved dry dog food formula, with real meat as now the #1 ingredient.
But even though they have been already eating Beneful dog food, this new formula is still considered a change for them, so I made sure to gradually change the food over a 7 day period.
For example, on the first day, I filled their bowls with 75% of their current food, and then added 25% of the new Beneful dry dog food to their bowls. The second day, 70/30; The third day 60/40 and so on until the 7th day, and they had made the switch completely to the new Beneful dry dog food formula.
7 Day Method For Switching Dog Food
Day 1: 75% current food; 25% new food
Day 2: 70% current food; 30% new food
Day 3: 60% current food; 40% new food
Day 4: 50% current food; 50% new food
Day 5: 40% current food; 60% new food
Day 6: 25% current food; 75% new food
Day 7 100% new food
It’s very important that you watch your dog carefully over this time period, being sure to watch out for a loss in appetite, diarrhea and/or vomiting. If you see any of those changes, it would be important to contact your vet.
About Beneful’s New Dry Dog Food Recipe
The Beneful team has been working to evolve its dry food recipes for the past two years, changing things up to use more ingredients dog owners are familiar with and want in their dogs’ food.
We recognize real meat as the first ingredient is increasingly important to dog owners, which is why real meat is now the #1 ingredient in Beneful’s beef and chicken dry foods. In case you’re curious, we’re working through our distribution channels to find enough salmon to update that recipe to real meat #1 as well in the future, but aren’t quite there yet.
Because we’re updating ingredients to offer what dog owners are asking for, we’re also excluding what they don’t want – there’s no added sugar in any of our new Beneful dry food recipes.
