It’s summer here in Miami and that means the mangos are literally all over town. Drive down any street and you find impromptu signs with the words Mangos For Sale. People just set up tables on their front lawns with signs like this one:
It’s an honor system to leave a little something for one of the sweet treats of summer that just happened to grow in your neighbor’s yard. Even my own little mango tree decided to bear a nice amount this year and I couldn’t wait for them to ripen.
We go to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico once or twice a year and one of my favorite things about Playa, (besides the beach, of course) are the street vendors selling spiced fruit. Mango, cantaloupe, watermelon, all sprinkled on top with a lime-chile seasoning. It gives the fruit just the right amount of sweet and spicy. So I had the idea, why not take my favorite mango chile spiced treat and make it into popsicles? Mango Chile Wine Popsicles! And even better, why not add a little wine to make them even more fun? I decided to go with a Sutter Home Chardonnay, to sweeten the tart lime-chile. Sutter Home wines are the perfect go-to wine for all sorts of summer time celebrations. The award-winning California winery has so many varietals at such affordable prices, you can always find the perfect wine for everyone and every occasion.
Ingredients: Sutter Home Chardonnay, fresh mangos, Mexican chamoy sauce, and chile lime seasoning blend.
Slice up your mangos. Of course, the riper, the sweeter.
You will need about 2 cups of chopped fresh mango. Mix in you blender on low, add about 1 cup Sutter Home Chardonnay.
Mexican chamoy sauce is a spicy mixture of fruit pulp, lime, spices and chiles. If you add it down the sides of the popsicle maker before adding your mango/wine mixture, it gives that pretty coloring on the sides. Go easy. I think on my first try I added just a little too much and it made them pretty tart until you got past that top part.
I picked up this popsicle maker from Amazon. I love it because you use regular wood sticks so whoever is enjoying your spicy mango popsicles can just throw the stick away when they are done, no need to save the sticks for next time or wash them. Those other plastic sticks always get thrown away anyways.
After a couple of hours in the freezer, we ended up with these! YUM! I added a pinch of the chile lime seasoning before serving, just like a Mexican fruit bowl. These aren’t your every day popsicles, these Mango Chile Wine popsicles are perfect for a little summer fiesta! (But remember, their for grownups only!)
Mango Chile Wine Popsicles
Ingredients:
Sutter Home Chardonnay (You could also use Sutter Home Pino Grigio)
Fresh Mangos
Mexican Chamoy sauce
Lime-Chile seasoning powder (Tajin or Trader Joes)
Directions:
1. Slice and cut the mangos into chunks that you will add to the blender. You will need between 2 and 2 1/2 cups of mango chunks. (Optional: I also set aside some mango that cut into tiny chunks to add the popsicles so that there would be little pieces of mango in the pops.
2. Add the mango chunks and a cup of Shutter Home Chardonnay to the blender and blend.
3. Use a small spoon to add the Mexican chamoy sauce to your popsicle molds. Be careful, a little goes a long way. The chamoy sauce is what adds that gorgeous red to the popsicles.
4. Add in those tiny mango chunks that you set aside earlier to each mold.
5. Top each popsicle mold with the mango/wine puree.
6. Freeze.
7. Serve with a sprinkle of the Lime Chile seasoning, that’s it!
